The barrel and cap are made from deer antlers.
According to the shrine tradition of Kasuga Taisha, during the reign of Empress Shotoku, Takemikazuchi no Mikoto is said to have ridden a white deer from Kashima Jingu (Ibaraki Prefecture) to Nara to protect Heijo-kyo.
Since then, the deer of Nara have been carefully protected as messengers of the gods.
