Three New Designs for "Maki-e Monogatari" Brush Pens, Inspired by Shosoin Treasures

These brush pens feature barrels adorned with Maki-e, a traditional Japanese craft brought to life through modern technology and the hands of skilled artisans. We deliver the unique colors and luster characteristic of Maki-e. The designs for this collection are all exceptionally brilliant, with motifs selected from the treasures of the Shosoin Repository. The modern and charming bird patterns, which do not feel old-fashioned, will appeal to contemporary sensibilities!

Shunshoku Banri (Spring Scenery Spanning a Thousand Miles)

The motif is selected from the "Kon-kyokechi Ashiginu no Kijoku" (Indigo Clamp-Resist Dyed Silk Mat) stored in the Southern Storehouse of the Shosoin Repository. This is a mat used to place offerings before Buddhist altars, dyed using a technique called kyokechi. It features waterfowl facing each other on a lotus-flower-shaped pedestal, positioned under a blooming, splendid flower tree. The intricate patterns, vibrant color scheme, and the skillful blending technique seen at the tips of the flower petals and leaves are recreated with elaborate maki-e.>>>>>>>Click here to purchase

Chouka Kabu (Birds Singing, Flowers Dancing)

The motif is selected from the "Shitan Mokuga So no Biwa" (Red Sandalwood Lute with Wood Inlay) stored in the Southern Storehouse of the Shosoin Repository. This is one of the five existing four-string lutes, exquisitely decorated with wood inlay using red sandalwood, ivory, and other materials. Centered around a mandarin duck holding a ribbon of flowers in its beak, bird patterns such as those of jays and ducks are arranged. The widely spread wings of the mandarin duck and the exquisite color palette of the flower ribbon are faithfully recreated with vibrant maki-e, based on historical records.>>>>>>>Click here to purchase

Ganjuchou (Bird with a Ribbon in its Beak)

The motif is selected from the "Kogebachiru no Shaku" (Red-Stained Engraved Ivory Ruler) stored in the Northern Storehouse of the Shosoin Repository. This is a dyed ivory ruler used in ceremonies to present rulers as gifts, symbolizing the correction of weights and measures during the vernal equinox, and by extension, the correction of conduct. Highly decorative patterns are arranged on both sides. Ganjuchou refers to a bird holding a ribbon (jyoutai) in its beak. The beauty of the flower pedestal and the twin birds with spread wings are recreated with brilliant maki-e.>>>>>>>Click here to purchase
